Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Lent marks the 40 days before Easter (not counting Sundays), and is a period of time when many Christians will fast from something during the Lenten Season. It is 6 weeks of self-discipline.
If you would like to fast or give something up during Lent, the key is to focus on repenting of sin and consecrating yourself to God. Although we should be repenting of sin throughout the year, it is a time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. It is not a time of bragging about one’s sacrifice, or trying to earn or increase God’s love. Here are some things that I have heard of people giving up:
- Meat
- Chocolate/Candy
- TV/Movies
- Social Media (FB)
- Soda
- Coffee/Caffeine
- Secular Music
- Complaining
- Naps
- Fast food
- Junk food
- Internet
And there are things you could add. Lent is not just about fasting, but feasting on Christ:
- A certain length of time for prayer
- Devotional/Quiet time
- Reading 1 chapter a day of Bible
- Reading a Christian book
- Substituting Christian music for secular
I hope you have a good and blessed Lent Season!
