It seems that every church has a mission and vision statement. This post is not about the value of those statements – it’s about multiple mission statements in a church.

The first question is – what is the ultimate goal of a church that has a KM and EM? Is it interdependent ministries? EM a department/ministry of the KM? 2 congregations under 1 roof? 2 churches under 1 roof? (Another issue for another post) The ultimate goal, the desired end product will help shape the answer for EM and KM mission/vision statements.

If the KM and EM are anywhere in the vicinity of being a single church, then what is the purpose of having differing mission statements? A church should have a single mission statement and each ministry should be in furthering of that mission. At the very least, the statements should be in alignment with each other so that there is unity, symmetry and coordination. Having 2 different mission statements in 1 church is like having a ship with 2 captains and 2 different destinations.

One practical first step is getting the leaders from KM and EM on the same page. Talking, dreaming, praying and sharing together. It may not be easy due to schedule, language and even cultural differences. But it is still absolutely necessary.
